Great Bristol Half Marathon - 17th September 2017 - Darren Frost

This is the biggest event I have taken part in with up to 10,000 runners.  I was impressed with the organisation.  The Park and Ride from Long Ashton was excellent with plenty of buses and the bonus of toilet facilities.

On arrival in the centre of Bristol we headed to Millennium Square where we found our luggage bus which was clearly identified with the same colour as our number.  As always, there were plenty of toilets, but also plenty of people wanting to use them, so queuing for 15 minutes or so was the only option.

The start was split into different waves depending on the estimated time you wrote on the entry form, I was in the second wave "white".  Each wave was set off about 6 minutes after the previous.

This meant that the start area was not very congested.

The route headed out of town along the river underneath the Clifton Suspension Bridge with a turnaround point at about 4 miles.  This enabled us to see the runners who were ahead of us coming back the other way.  I did spot Jason Scott shooting by, we managed a quick shout hi.  Also managed to shout to Paul Quinton and high five my mate Rupert.  Then it was back to concentrating on my 5min/km pace target.

Heading back to the centre of town the route became more interesting taken in Queens Square and looping round Castle Park.  There was some awkward cobbled sections too.

At 10 miles I started to struggle a bit but managed to keep going with the help of a hand full of jelly babies and with the crowd spurring me on.

I finally crossed the line at 1:45:17, less than a minute slower than my PB at Yeovil this year.  I was extremely happy with this result.

I bumped into Paul after the race where we discovered that our times were very close, shame we didn't meet up at the beginning to run together.

I would definitely recommend this race.
